A driver is the power supply of an LED fixture — the device that turns mains electricity into the current the LED chips need. It sits hidden inside the fitting or in a service enclosure, yet it decides how long the fixture lasts: most early LED failures are driver failures, not dead chips.
What stands out
- Replacing the right driver often saves the whole fixture instead of scrapping it.

Choosing the right one
Three things must match: output voltage within the load's range, output current matching the fixture, and total load wattage below the driver's rating — leave at least 20% headroom for stability. Control type must be decided early because the standards are not interchangeable and must match the building's control system. Published lifetimes always assume a stated temperature, so mounting one in a sealed box with no heat path invalidates the figure.
